opinion: why science should be your wellness influencer

science confirms that dietary choices impact your gut health. adobe stock
canadians’ interest in gut health is at an all-time high. according to google trends, queries for “good gut health” have surged by 70 per cent over the past five years. yet, collectively, our general gut health could use some support. frequent digestive discomfort is a common reality. in a survey of 2,000 canadians, over half of respondents (56 per cent) said they experienced symptoms like bloating at least once a week. this issue is even more pronounced among women and younger adults, where the number climbs to nearly two in three.
many of us are searching for solutions, but we’re overwhelmed with online advice offering quick fixes with unclear or absent scientific substance. while social media platforms can be a source of connection and inspiration, they also host a flood of health recommendations that can be overwhelming and sometimes misleading. a canadian medical association survey revealed that 62 per cent of canadians say they’ve encountered health information on social media they later found to be false or misleading, an 8 per cent jump from 2024.
amid the noise of online “wellness” trends, it’s easy to lose sight of simple, science-backed truths. the secret to better gut health isn’t a quick fix or a single solution, but a myriad of consistent habits that can result in improvements. it’s all about building a holistic and sustainable routine that supports your overall well-being.

nourish your gut with a diverse diet including prebiotic fibre

a foundational step to supporting your gut is nourishing the beneficial bacteria already living there. this is best achieved with a diverse diet, rich in a variety of foods. plant-based foods like veggies, fruit, whole grains and beans are sources of dietary fibre, including prebiotic fibre, which is a nutrient source for your gut’s microorganisms. while the importance of fibre has become trendy to talk about lately, in the nutrition science community, it is a highly valued, timeless staple. supporting digestive health, prebiotic fibre is a nutrient source for your gut’s microbiome.

find lifestyle habits that make you feel good and do them regularly

beyond diet, our daily habits are cornerstones of digestive wellness. daily movement, for instance, does more than keep you fit; it stimulates the digestive system and contributes to a more diverse gut microbiome. just as important is how we manage stress, as chronic tension can negatively impact the gut. finding relaxation techniques that work for you—whether it’s meditation, a walk in nature, or simply unplugging—can have a profound and positive effect on managing stress levels. finally, a consistent sleep schedule is vital, allowing your entire body, including your digestive system, to rest and repair. the key is to find health-promoting habits you genuinely enjoy, as consistency is what ultimately builds a foundation for lasting gut health.

try probiotics

once you have established these foundational diet and lifestyle habits, you might consider introducing probiotics. probiotics are live microorganisms that, when taken in adequate amounts, can provide a health benefit.
while backed by a growing body of scientific research, it’s crucial to understand that not all probiotics are the same. different strains provide different health benefits, and they must be consumed in adequate amounts to optimize the chance that they’ll be effective. clinical research shows that the right probiotic, taken correctly, can be a helpful ally for your health. probiotics have been associated with several benefits, for example, supporting a healthy immune system, decreasing the risk of certain infections, reinforcing the gut’s natural barrier and immune defense functions and normalizing aspects of metabolic health.
dairy foods like yogurt are an effective vehicle for adding probiotics. they naturally buffer the stomach’s acidity, increasing the likelihood that these beneficial bacteria will arrive safely in the intestines (or gut) where they do their important work. however, for these benefits to take root, consistency is crucial. introducing probiotics is not a one-time fix but rather the cultivation of a healthy habit. additionally, yogurt is a nutritious and affordable food that also provides calcium and protein. when building this new routine, select a probiotic that has research to show it provides the benefit you are looking for.
