epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder where brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. seizures can vary widely in severity and symptoms.
epilepsy may occur as a result of a genetic disorder, brain injury, stroke, or infectious disease. however, in over half of cases, the cause is unknown.
diagnosis typically involves an analysis of the patient's medical history and an assessment of neurological functions, often including an electroencephalogram (eeg) and brain imaging.
treatment includes medications called anti-epileptic drugs (aeds) and sometimes surgery, devices, or dietary changes.
