at the time of the 12-month post-surgical follow-up, more than half of those who played sports prior to surgery returned to play, most within 12 weeks of leaving the hospital. this aligns with previous studies reporting pain and physical function is markedly improved three months post-op and reaches peak improvement by six months.
individuals most likely to return to sports were younger, male and had a lower bmi (body mass index) and less medical complications than the rest of the study subjects.
“notably, we found that preoperative sports participation level was the strongest predictor of postoperative return to sports — with both recreational and competitive athletes having 10-fold greater odds of returning compared with non-athletes,” the study’s authors said.
but it’s not only the added motivation of returning to their active lifestyle that gets individuals back up to speed after knee-replacement surgery. a japanese study reported the greater the strength in the affected knee and the higher the daily step count prior to surgery, the higher the step count and gait speed post-surgery.
“the level of preoperative physical activity is an important factor affecting the level of postoperative physical activity,” the researchers said.
keeping as active as possible, even if you need to modify your activity, in the months leading up to surgery increases the chances of a return to sports and physical activity. the better shape you go into the surgery the more likely you are to have a speedy return to play.
strength training, cycling and swimming are some of the activities that can usually be maintained while waiting for surgery. strength training in particular has proved effective in helping relieve or lessen the pain of knee osteoarthritis. and the greater the number of steps you take a day will certainly pay off during the first few weeks of recovery.
