i’m the editor emeritus of the toronto sun but the jobs i most love are the two i have now — editorial writer and political columnist.

every assignment i’ve had since joining the sun in 1978 — reporter, feature writer, columnist, bureau chief, city editor and comment editor — prepared me for what i do today.

i focus on comparing what governments promise they’ll do before they’re elected with what they do after they’re elected. they are seldom the same.

i never thought of a career in journalism when i was young because while i loved to write, i was painfully shy, so i mostly wrote poetry and later studied english and history at university.

journalism gave me a reason to talk to people and write their stories and from that moment on, i was hooked.
