man rescued from early-morning structure fire in halifax

firefighters rescued a man from a structure fire in halifax early thursday.
halifax regional fire assistant chief sherry dean said crews were called to a rowhouse in the 3000 block of barrington street at 6:03 a.m.
“the call came in as a confirmed structure fire, and we upgraded to a second alarm based on the building type,” dean said. “rowhouses are high risk” because of the potential for spread to other units.
luckily, that didn’t happen.
“within 15 minutes of arrival the fire was under control, and within 30 minutes the fire was declared out,” dean said.
she said crews brought a male occupant out of the home and transferred his care to paramedics, but she was unsure of his condition or where he was found in the home.
“we did get reports that everyone was out of the structure, but as per usual we never assume that’s the case.”
the fire started on the second level of the three-level home, dean said, but she didn’t know what room it originated in or what the cause was. that is being looked into by the department’s investigators.
she said damage was contained to the apartment of origin and didn’t have any impact on units on either side.

just five minutes after the house fire was reported, another fire was called in at an encampment site on barrington street under the macdonald bridge, not far away.
dean said the tent fire was not large, but she didn’t have a lot of information.
there was no connection between the two fires, she said.

halifax regional police spokesman const. martin cromwell said the department assisted with traffic around both fire scenes, and there were no reported injuries.
municipal crews were at the site later in the morning cleaning up the remains of the site, including burned debris and unburned items. burned and tattered pieces of blue tarp could be seen among the debris being shoveled up and placed into about half a dozen garbage bags.

the area around the halifax side of the bridge has been the scene of several fires over the past few years involving single tents as well as larger encampments.
