a mexican cartel leader was arrested for allegedly ordering the murder of a beauty influencer who broke up with his son.
valeria marquez was fatally shot in the head and chest by a gunman posing as a delivery driver in may 2025.
marquez, 23, was in the middle of a tiktok livestream when someone is heard entering her salon in jalisco and asking to confirm her name before opening fire.
soon after, the woman’s body is slumped onto a table while another woman rushed to stop the filming.
heartbroken revenge and another murder?
alvarez ayala, dubbed r1 by authorities, allegedly received a call from his son, francisco alvarez, according to omar garcía harfuch, mexico’s secretary of security and citizen protection, per excelsior.
“he [alvarez] had threatened her on several occasions and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, r1, to carry out the femicide,” the official said.
alvarez ayala, a senior figure in the jalisco new generation cartel, was also wanted in the november 2025 assassination of carlos manzo, the mayor of uruapan.
manzo, 40, was killed in front of horrified supporters at a day of the dead celebration one month after calling for “brute force” against drug cartels.
“i don’t want to be just another murdered mayor,” he said, per excelsior. “but it is important not to let fear control us.”
authorities have arrested 31 people in connection with the politician’s murder, including 17-year-old shooter victor manuel ubaldo, but garcia harfuch insisted in an x post that alvarez ayala was the “mastermind behind the cowardly murder.”
still on the hunt
the drug lord was captured by special forces in atotonilco el alto, jalisco, on thursday, according to the outlet.
neither alvarez nor the gunman who executed marquez has been arrested.

alvarez ayala is being held in altiplano, a maximum security facility near mexico city from which el chapo escaped on july 11, 2015.
the cartel leader is facing charges of possession of methamphetamines for the purpose of trafficking, carrying a firearm, and the possession of cartridges for the exclusive use of the mexican army.
“’el-r-1′ is identified as the main leader of “los rs”, one of the most violent criminal cells linked to the cjng, with operations in apatzingán, uruapan, and morelia, michoacán, as well as in jalisco,” garcía harfuch said in his translated x post.
“this organization is involved in extortion, murders, and drug trafficking, directly affecting producers, business owners, and families in the region.”
before her murder, marquez claimed she was being threatened and said that if anything were to happen to her or her family, her ex-boyfriend is “responsible.”
