u.s. independence day festivities got a little out of hand for a florida driver who got pulled over by cops after a police helicopter noticed fireworks being launched from his vehicle on a highway.
video released by the st. johns county sheriff’s office on monday included footage taken from the air unit showing sparks flying from a vehicle towing a boat travelling down the i-95 in st. augustine, fla., on july 4.
“they appear to be shooting fireworks out of the window at cars on the interstate,” an officer of the air unit says in the video.
when an officer pulls the driver over, body camera footage shows the cop telling the driver that fireworks were seen being launched from the passenger side of his vehicle.
“no dude, not us,” the driver says.
both he and another man in the passenger seat continue to deny their involvement after the officer tells them that a police helicopter had spotted the incident.
“not this car?” the officer asks.
“no sir, the passenger responds.

‘it’s on recording’

the video then cuts to a clip from the helicopter showing more sparks coming from the vehicle with an air unit officer saying, “we got it on camera, but it looks like it was mortar style. it looked like one of them bounced off the ground on the opposite lane of the traffic.”
the video then cuts back to body-cam footage showing the officer telling the driver he was being followed by a police helicopter “for the past 10 miles.”
“you’re going to stick with that story?” the cop asks. “like, let’s be real, it’s on recording.”
the video then shows a person being handcuffed.
police said the passenger was arrested and charged with shooting a deadly missile from a moving vehicle.
“we understand fireworks are a fun way to celebrate, but only when handled safely and responsibly,” st. johns county sheriff’s office said in a post on x. “only ignite fireworks from a hard surface, a safe distance from people and other objects.”
