the civic holiday long weekend was the deadliest weekend that ontario provincial police said they had seen this year.
“five people died in road crashes across the province, three people died out on the water — one in a capsized canoe, two in a powerboat collision,” opp sgt. kerry schmidt said thursday in a video posted on x.
the opp said its long-weekend enforcement campaign led to more than 8,240 charges being laid related to traffic and marine safety, including 3,921 charges for speeding, 579 for seatbelt violations, 77 for distracted driving and 188 for impaired driving.
“we are out there trying to make sure people make better decisions. we hope that education and enforcement change drivers’ behaviour and, hopefully, save some lives. but the fact that we have eight people die over the weekend is an absolute tragedy and preventable as well,” schmidt said.
with the upcoming labour day and thanksgiving day long weekends looming, he urged ontarians to think about everyone’s safety while trying to get to their destinations.

dozens charged in cottage country patrols

on wednesday, the opp released figures from their enforcement campaign on waterways and off-road trails in cottage country, which spanned last week and over the civic holiday long weekend.
it noted that over half of the 42 charges it laid were for alcohol-related offences and for failing to carry or wear a life-jacket.
“a life-jacket only works if you’re wearing it,” the opp said in a news release.
it also warned that boating and drinking do not mix and that “the consequences of operating a vessel while impaired are the same as those for impaired driving on ontario highways.”
