jameela jamil is taking aim at ariana grande’s team, after it was recently announced the singer-actress would soon be stepping away from the public eye.
on friday, grande released the music video for her new song petal, which contains warnings of “explicit content” and “graphic violence.”
while it appears to reflect the oscar nominee’s journey to stardom, many fans, including jamil, shared their concern on social media about the singer’s health and body image.
“this poor woman is possibly dying right in front of us,” jamil wrote in a since-deleted comment on eating disorder recovery advocate charli howard’s post.
“this outfit is designed to accentuate the thinness for discourse,” jamil continued. “her team are thoroughly irresponsible for not guiding her away from this deeply damaging image for her young fans to see so glamorized.”
jameela jamil comments on ariana grande’s appearance in her recently released ‘petal’ music video, stating that her outfit was designed to emphasize on ariana’s weight for discourse.

two days later, grande’s rep told people that the focker-in-law actress “will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the eternal sunshine tour. she looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily.”
they added: “this tour has been a beautiful experience for her. she loves her fans and has loved every minute of this tour so much.”
grande has also pulled out of her highly anticipated west end debut in the stephen sondheim musical sunday in the park with george, in which she was set to star opposite her wicked co-star jonathan bailey next summer.
how accurate is the ‘petal’ video?
grande’s petal video looks at how the entertainment industry treats women and girls, with the actress playing a hopeful actress auditioning for a part while she is rejected repeatedly by old men in suits who brand her “unmarketable,” “unattractive” and “inauthentic.”

she eventually gets her bloody revenge on the execs but not before fans were quick to spot one detail, a note by one of the producers about grande’s character that appears to read: “lovely voice, very kind but nothing special. boring on the eyes. a little homely! couldn’t hurt to lose a few lbs.”
the comments section of the video was flooded with fans simply “wanting her to be healthy.”
jamil doesn’t back down
jamil continued her criticism of grande’s team on her instagram stories.
“the shrinking pop star situation is something of a trolley problem,” the good place actress said of grande.
“if we comment on her body, we could harm her mental health, which would be awful, and nobody wants that,” she continued. “if we don’t comment on her body, we run the risk of normalising that image to hundreds of millions of teenage girls, kids and even impressionable adults, consuming her content. content which is pointedly accentuating her bones and tiny frame with belts and corsets.”
jamil added: “i think it’s worth considering that the pop star in question has access to a lot of mental health care and the best facilities on the planet, whereas the fans watching, largely don’t. many have no support system equipped to handle the deadly clutches of anorexia.”
jamil noted that the images of grande from her petal video “are flooding pro- anorexia websites and teenage girls are saying ‘goals.’
“when will it be time to intervene as a public and stop normalising, glamorising, and on some occasions championing this? when we lose a young woman in the public eve?”
she then suggested two eating disorder education and support groups for those who may be interested, adding, “sending everyone love, and if you’re triggered or inspired by imagery of skin and bones on your favourite popstar please have a look at the work of @neda or @alliancefored.”
