when i meet new people, i always tend to ask them questions rather than talk about myself. i’ve been this way my whole life, which is likely why i gravitated to journalism — i get paid to ask people questions and tell their stories.
the articles i like to write are about giving a voice, and ideally justice, to vulnerable or victimized people. that was heavily influenced by my early days in newspapers when, due to geography or wonderful mentors, i covered change-making issues such as the paul bernardo crimes in ontario, missing women from vancouver’s downtown eastside and b.c.’s highway of tears, and the many failings of the foster care system.
i have been fortunate enough to have been nominated for a few awards over the years. but the true award from this work is the people i get to meet through my interviews, and the colleagues i get to work alongside every day.
