my news career began at 10, with a satirical weekly i wrote and sold door to door while delivering the toronto star.
an internship at vancouver magazine led to my first job as associate editor; after joining the vancouver sun i co-founded the award-winning mix magazine, became literary editor and later served in multiple senior editorial roles before moving to reporting while raising a family.
i have received three webster awards, a sovereign award, an amnesty international award, a western magazine award for best new magazine, and was a national newspaper award finalist.
my fiction, essays and poetry have appeared in the journey prize anthology, toronto life, salon.com and other journals.
i mentor other writers with manuscripts in development.
