detroit tigers’ prize rookie pitcher jackson jobe is done for the season.
the tigers announced that jobe will under surgery for a ulnar collateral ligament injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025 season.
“we’ve seen this before, we know what that process will look like,” tigers’ general manager jeff greenberg said in a post-game media session. “very confident he’s going to comeback and be a really important contributor for this team fora long time.”
the tigers selected jobe with the third overall pick in the 2021 major league baseball draft. the right-hander made the roster out of spring training and was considered mlb’s no. 5 prospect coming into the season.
the 22-year-old jobe was 4-1 posted a 4.22 earned-run average in 10 starts, but was pulled in his start on may 28th against the san francisco giants after 4 2/3 innings and placed on the injured list with what was described as a grade 1 right flexor strain.
“jackson was diagnosed with a flexor strain after his last start on the 28th,” greenberg said. “as is standard process in our medical evaluation process, we sought additional evaluations.
“through that evaluation process, a ucl injury was also discovered. from there, there were a series of conversations between jackson, the doctors our medical staff and ultimately surgery was determined as the path.”

a ucl injury occurs when the humerus (upper arm bone) and the ulna (forearm bone) is stretched, which often happens from repeated stress. greenberg said a surgery date has not yet been set. normal recovery time from the injury can take between 12-and-18 months.
“it’s obviously really disappointing news,” greenberg said. “really feel for jackson. obviously, everybody sees the talent and he made a really positive impression to this team in his short time here. he’s going to work through this. he’s a very determined individual.”
