windsor’s bob boughner is back in the nhl.

windsor’s bob boughner is back in the nhl.
the former windsor spitfires’ majority owner and head coach has been hired as an assistant coach by the new york islanders under head coach patrick roy.
the 54-year-old boughner played 10 seasons in the nhl before returning home to buy the spitfires. he led the team to two memorial cup titles and was twice named canadian hockey league coach of the year.
boughner has served as head coach of the florida panthers and san jose sharks and has a 
147-147-45 mark over parts of five seasons while also serving as an assistant coach with the sharks and the columbus blue jackets.
boughner had served as associate coach of the detroit red wings for parts of three seasons before he was let go by the club in december along with head coach derek lalonde, who has since joined the toronto maple leafs.
mauro takes title
the windsor lancers’ alek mauro won the men’s individual title at the canadian university/college golf championships, which were held in kamloops, b.c.
a st. joseph high school product that previously attended the university of detroit mercy on scholarship, mauro finished with a four-round total of 10-under par 278, which gave him a one-stroke victory in the event.

with the win, mauro secured a spot in the 120th canadian men’s amateur golf championship, which will be held in gatineau, que. starting on july 26.
sova heads to ncaa
tecumseh’s spencer sova has inked an ncaa scholarship deal to play at the university of nebraska-omaha.
a former first-round pick by the erie otters, the 21-year-old sova played three seasons for the otters before being dealt to the brampton steelheads last season.
a six-foot-one, 190-pound defenceman, sova finished his ohl career with 44 goals and 130 points in 248 games.
metcalfe passes away
former windsor spitfire forward scott metcalfe passed away on saturday at the age of 58.
a former first-round pick by the nhl’s edmonton oilers, metcalfe played 19 games in the nhl with the buffalo sabres over parts of three seasons, but spent the majority of his 15 year professional career in the american hockey league.
the spitfires acquired metcalfe from the kingston canadians during the 1986-87 season and he posted 10 goals in 22 points in 18 games along with 52 penalty minutes. he would help the spitfires reach the third round of the playoffs, but turned pro the following season when the club won its first ontario hockey league title.
