in four years, alek manoah has gone from one of the best in the game to currently out of the game.
on wednesday, the former toronto blue jays all-star was released by the los angeles angels after the beefy right-hander had a rough stretch with the triple-a salt lake bees.

in 10 starts with the bees, he posted a 16.14 era and a 1-7 record. his final trip to the bump with the organization occurred july 28 against the sugar land space cowboys.
the 28-year-old went 3.1 innings, allowing seven earned runs on one hit and six walks. he threw 80 pitches, 32 for strikes.
manoah started the season with the angels, but he was sent to triple-a after three starts. in those three starts, he posted an era of 9.82 in 7.1 innings pitched with eight walks.
it was not that long ago that manoah was the toast of the town.
the jays drafted manoah 11th overall in the 2019 amateur draft out of west virginia. he made his mlb debut with the big club in 2021, picking up the win in toronto’s 2-0 triumph over the new york yankees on may 27. he struck out seven and allowed two hits in six complete innings. he finished the season with a 9-2 record in 111.2 innings pitched with a 3.22 era. he finished ninth in the american league rookie of the year voting.

the following year, manoah started the all-star game and finished third in the al cy young award voting after a 16-7 record with a 2.24 era and 0.992 whip over 196.1 ip in 31 starts. and who can forget his all-star game when he was mic’d up for the fox broadcast as he struck out the side in the second inning, fanning william contrerasjoc pederson and ronald acuna.
but manoah had a tough 2023 season, starting 19 games and posting a 3-9 record and a 5.87 era, eventually getting sent to the minors to fix control issues. he made five starts for the blue jays in 2024 before he was sidelined in june to repair his right ulnar collateral ligament. he missed the remainder of the season. he was designated for assignment by the blue jays in september 2025.

the braves picked him up off waivers on sept. 26 of last year. he did not pitch for the braves, as atlanta non-tended him on nov. 21.
the angels then signed him less than a month after he was released by the braves, inking a one-year, $1.95 million us contract on dec. 2.
