did you know that april is oral health month? it’s the perfect time to take stock of your oral care routine and address any concerns you might have. but are canadians truly paying attention to their gum health?
shockingly, a survey by colgate-palmolive revealed that 64 per cent of canadians suffer from gum bleeding and inflammation but almost half choose to ignore the issue or take minimal action. among those aged 18-34, the proportion is even higher at 74 per cent.1 despite this prevalent issue, many dismiss it as normal, unaware of the potential consequences.
“bleeding gums are never normal and should always be addressed,” says dr. mandeep johal, a guelph, ont. based dentist in private practice. “dentists call gum disease a ‘silent disease,’ because rarely will you feel pain. blood in the sink or on your toothbrush is a sign of early gum disease, and you should take steps to make sure it does not advance to a more severe stage.”
early gum disease, while common, is entirely preventable and reversible with proper oral hygiene. here’s why it’s unacceptable to ignore.
gum disease, which affects the gums, bone and supporting tissues around your teeth, can be sneaky. it often progresses without causing pain in its early stages. things like smoking, diabetes, some medications and hormonal changes can make it worse. it’s crucial to recognize the signs of early gum disease.2
