shortly after a bedeque councillor noticed one of the community’s four newly-installed welcome signs was gone, cao kevin mckenna told the journal pioneer he had little hope for its recovery “unless we can find the sign somewhere’s in a ditch.”
that’s exactly what happened.
“i picked up the sign from a local farmer, about 20 kilometres away from the original spot,” he said. “it was found in a farmer’s hayfield in north freetown.”

the sign, put up on july 17, was stolen within days — mckenna guesses between july 21 and 31. by july 30, it was back in the municipality’s possession.
after stumbling upon it, the farmer who found the sign — who mckenna said didn’t wish to be identified — called the community, letting them know it had turned up and to come get it.
in mid july, the rural municipality of bedeque installed four new welcome signs. within the week, one, located on callbeck road, had been stolen. it was recovered a week later in a nearby farmer’s field.

while how it got there remains a mystery, mckenna credits social media and people spreading the word for its recovery.
“it all worked out,” he said. “i’m very surprised, i thought it was a goner, i thought we’d have to go and purchase a new one.”
