in fall 2024, the province announced an investment of $10 million toward a five-year strategy aimed at upgrading and improving provincial parks.
as part of this work, jacques cartier memorial park, a campground near kildare, received a new washroom in summer 2025. the old building is set to be moved, with the province having put out a tender in early may for its removal.
per the document on the provincial parks strategy, the province aims to maximize the enjoyment of parkgoers and ensure longevity of the sites. as well, it looks to rebuild infrastructure lost in the aftermath of tropical storm fiona, upgrade park rules and regulations and upgrade services and amenities, such as the jacques cartier provincial park washroom building.

but some p.e.i. politicians don’t want to see the upgrades at the campground start and end with the new washroom. in the legislature on may 20, o’leary mla robert henderson raised a question regarding fast-charging electric vehicle charging stations, both at jacques cartier and at cedar dunes provincial park near o’leary, noting that there have been requests for such.
“look, there aren’t people here coming to prince edward island just with a regular ev anymore,” said henderson. “plenty of them are pulling rvs with an electric towed vehicle behind them. they arrive, or after a long drive, they need a charge in a rural park.”
in response, tourism minister ernie hudson echoed that he has heard requests for charging stations at cedar dunes, and that he has had discussions with staff on how to move forward in that regard.
“i do agree with what the honourable member is putting forward, certainly not only with regard to tourists, ones who may be coming to our beautiful province by way of electric vehicles, but also, certainly, we do have residents as well that stay there pretty well year-round,” hudson said.
