will be closed indefinitely because of blue-green algae.
the water at the highly popular oakfield provincial park on grand lake near enfield is off limits for recreational use after city officials detected a cyanobacteria bloom, more commonly known as blue-green algae.
the toxic scum is unhealthy for humans and pets to swim in and can be especially dangerous if ingested. skin and any unprotected orifices can become irritated from exposure and it’s common for people to get sick if they swallow any of the compromised water.
in extreme cases, dogs can die from drinking water that contains the algae. a dog died in 2021 after an exposure at grand lake.

hrm officials circulated the following extensive list of precautions on tuesday:
“avoid water contact. if contact occurs, towel off vigorously and wash with tap water as soon as possible. do not swim or wade (or allow your children or pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae is visible or in areas that have been closed to swimming due to possible blue-green algae. keep pets on-leash and do not allow them to consume blue-green algae material.
“avoid consuming water from this lake. avoid consuming fish that has come from this lake. people who come in contact with blue-green algae blooms or ingest water containing blue-green algae blooms may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. children and immune-compromised individuals are at a higher risk. if you have these symptoms, please seek medical assistance.”

although oakfield park is a small area on the east side of the large lake, it’s common sense for others, like boaters and all lakefront residents, to heed the warnings as well. testing is conducted at all municipally supervised beaches, but there are countless other lakes, ponds and rivers that are unmonitored.
