the victim from a friday shooting in dartmouth has been identified as thomas junior downey.
halifax regional police released the update monday, describing him as a 39-year-old from north preston who was pronounced deceased at 10:30 p.m. when officers arrived at the lahey road scene.
hrp also said in a news release that “the nova scotia medical examiner service conducted an autopsy and confirmed the man’s manner of death to be homicide.”
in an initial communication friday, hrp said “this is not believed to be a random incident” and asked the public for any help with tips.
lahey road is a two-block residential street located near the corner of victoria road and albro lake road, just west of the downtown area.
“anyone who may have video from the area is asked to contact police if they haven’t already been spoken to by calling 902-490-5020,” said hrp.
“anonymous tips can be sent to crime stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-tips (8477), submitting a secure web tip at crimestoppers.ns.ca or by using the p3 tips app.”
hrp also confirmed downey had previously been charged with aggravated assault, robbery with a firearm, assault with a weapon and several other firearm offences following a july 6, 2022 shooting on cunard street in halifax.
information from a feb. 17, 2023 release described the incident as retaliation against a 31-year-old man, who was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
