drivers will soon be expected to pay for parking on saturdays in downtown halifax and dartmouth.
starting july 18, payment will be required in parking zones b and c in halifax, which have lower water street, south park street, cogswell street and south street as their borders. zone h in dartmouth has a perimeter that includes alderney drive, dahlia street, park avenue and maple street.
payments can be made at pay stations or through the hotspot app in the same way as weekday parking in those areas. enforcement will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

a public service announcement from the halifax regional municipality said, “the first hour is free, followed by a flat rate of two dollars per hour. parking regulations will be enforced during paid hours on saturdays, and vehicles without a registered parking session may receive a ticket, regardless of length of stay.”
the statement also described the change as “part of regional council’s direction through the 2026-27 municipal budget.”
“the change is intended to help manage high weekend demand, encourage turnover of parking spaces and improve access to short-term parking. this will make it easier for residents, visitors and customers to access nearby shops, services and destinations.
“this approach supports a fair, user-pay model for managing on-street parking, contributes to a vibrant and accessible downtown, and helps sustain municipal services. it also aligns with the ‘moving better, enabling prosperity and responsible administration’ priorities outlined in the 2026–2030 strategic plan by improving transportation efficiency, enhancing access to downtown businesses and supporting a fair, user-pay approach to managing a shared public asset.”
the announcement said there are more than 600 signs in the three zones that will all be updated by july 18.
