rogers sports and media is shutting down halifax radio station newsradio 95.7 as part of a wave affecting six outlets across the country.
in a statement to the chronicle herald, a spokesperson for rogers sports and media said the “difficult but necessary decision” to close the station came following a review of all stations in their network.
the halifax station was one of six being closed across four markets, with stations also closing in kitchener, ont., vancouver and calgary.
“we are grateful to our listeners and to our team for their contributions to the local community,” the statement said.
the move comes one day after the company announced it was the 100 per cent owner of maple leaf sports and entertainment, buying out kilmer sports inc.’s one-quarter stake in the conglomerate for $4.35 billion.
in the statement, the spokesperson said the reason for the station closures was a result of declines in revenue and listener trends, directing listeners to their online platforms for continued local coverage.
“we continue to invest in local news here through citynews digital (web and social),” the statement said.
rogers sports and media owns 44 radio stations in 30 communities throughout the country.
