the owners of 2 doors down food and wine announced their popular halifax location will close on new year’s day.
in a facebook post on wednesday, owners george davis and darren lewis said they had entered into a formal agreement to sell the barrington street restaurant. davis and lewis also own the 2 doors down location in dartmouth crossing.
“we’ve had this restaurant for 15 years and it just felt like it was a nice opportunity to step back for a bit to focus on dartmouth,” said davis. “as my wife calls me, i’m a bit of a dreamer, and i always have something on my mind that i want to do. it allows me the time to maybe focus on some future projects that i have always wanted to look at to see if i can go forward with them.”
davis said any plans he has would be down the road.
“i have put pen to paper, but there’s nothing brick and mortar yet.”
davis, lewis and craig flinn opened the halifax location as an offshoot of their chives restaurant in 2013. flinn sold his stake in the restaurant in 2021.
the halifax location helped make many memories and forged many friendships, said lewis.
“we have always loved designing menus for everyone there. what made me most happy was seeing some people that i first hired in 2013 comment on how much they enjoyed their time there and the friendships that are still lasting from the people who worked there.

“it was always a family and i always felt like it was part of my extended family.
“it is hard to leave that space, but i am happy we have dartmouth crossing. it’s a place to create those wonderful memories.”

lewis has an idea of what the future holds for the halifax location but said it was up to the new owners to share the details.
“i think i have had my opportunity to tell my story and say my goodbyes,” said lewis. “i would love for the next person coming in, when they are ready, to share their vision for the space. it’s a beautiful location, a beautiful space, and i think what they are going to do can bring a little life back into the environment.”
the last serving at the halifax location will be on new year’s eve and a special menu has been designed for the occasion, said davis.
“we tried to create a menu for everyone. we kept the price point, i think, affordable,” said davis. “you can do a four-course choice menu of the selections for $50. i think in this time of affordability, i wanted to do something that everyone could hopefully come out and enjoy our last service.”
davis and lewis offered thanks in the post to those who enjoyed their time at the restaurant.
“thank you, halifax — and thank you to our remarkable team — for every memory and every plate shared. you will always be part of us.”

i’m in my fourth decade with the chronicle herald. as a lifelong sports fan, athlete and amateur coach, the opportunity to tell the stories of nova scotia athletes has been a great pleasure. celebrating the 40th anniversary of dalhousie women's volleyball team's ciau championship, the love story of two of nova scotia's top curlers and celebrating nova scotia hall of fame inductees are a few of my favourite topics.
