u.s. president donald trump called canadians “nasty” while also saying he loves “the people.”
during a speech at the red rock casino resort spa in las vegas on wednesday to promote washington’s economic agenda, trump started talking about tariffs, and repeated how it’s his favourite word.
“remember i used to say ‘tariffs’ are my favourite word. i love tariffs,” said trump. “they’re my favourite word in the dictionary. tariff. i love tariffs.”
the president said tariffs have been used against the united states “for years,” listing off countries such as china, japan, south korea, germany and mexico, before turning his attention to his neighbour to the north, canada.
“canada. canada is nasty. they are,” said trump.
“they are nasty. i love the people, but they’re nasty. nasty leadership.”
trump said the u.s. has “turned the tables on everybody” with tariffs and that’s why americans are “seeing the numbers you haven’t seen before.”
during his speech, trump highlighted several initiatives from his second presidential term, including tax breaks on tipped income, lower prescription drug prices, and his so-called “trump accounts,” usa today reported.
trump claimed inflation has lessened and that his administration has helped reduce costs for consumers.
“the economy is the greatest economy we’ve ever had,” trump told those in attendance.
vice president jd vance also took a shot at canada on wednesday.
in a fox news interview with laura ingraham, vance was asked who was beating the u.s. in the g7, to which he replied “nobody.”
“how about canada doing?” ingraham asked.
“they’re doing terribly,” vance retorted.

carney takes jab at trump

when technology fails, why not take a shot at trump?
that’s what prime minister mark carney did on wednesday in the middle of a news conference in toronto on housing policy after the teleprompter with his speech on it malfunctioned.

“i would like to inform you that the teleprompter has ceased to function. unlike a certain world leader, i do not view this as a conspiracy,” said carney to laughter.
the pm’s remark was a reference to trump’s call for an investigation after encountering a stopped escalator and a non-functioning teleprompter at the united nations general assembly last year, reuters reported.
the relationship between canada and the u.s. has been tense since trump returned to the white house in 2025. trump slapped a number of broad tariffs on canada while also calling for the country to become the 51st state of the u.s.
