a 19-year-old man killed in a targeted shooting in burnaby on wednesday night was suspected of having ties to the drug trade, homicide investigators have confirmed.
connor sheriff was gunned down just after 6:30 p.m. in a parking lot outside the station square mall at mckay avenue and kingsborough street, next to the metropolis at metrotown mall.
sgt. freda fong, of the integrated homicide investigation team, said that, “despite life-saving efforts, the man did not survive.”
she said that a short time later, police responded to a vehicle fire — a hallmark of b.c. gangland slayings — in the area of kingsway and inman avenue, on the edge of central park.
“the investigation is in its early stages. however, investigators have confirmed the burnt vehicle is the suspect vehicle involved in the shooting,” fong said.

she identified sheriff as the victim and said “he was known to police and is believed to have connections to the drug trade.”
“this was a targeted and brazen shooting in a high-traffic area,” fong said. “those involved displayed a complete disregard for public safety.”
sheriff has no criminal charges or convictions in b.c., according to the online court database.
the parking lot where the shooting happened is surrounded by a condo tower, a medical clinic and several stores, including a best buy, dollarama and structube furniture store.
