update: surrey woman in serious condition after gunshots fired into home

a woman was seriously injured when shots were fired into a home in surrey early sunday morning.
according to staff sgt. lindsey houghton of surrey police service, the shooting happened at about 2:45 a.m. at a home in the 13000-block of 103a avenue.
“paramedics were administering life-saving medical intervention to an adult female who was inside the residence at the time and had suffered a gunshot wound,” houghton said.
at that time, the victim’s condition was critical. on monday, houghton said her condition was now serious, but stable.
houghton said that the department’s major crime section is looking at whether the shooting is linked to an extortion attempt.
“i can’t confirm it is related to extortion, but given the frequency of extortions it is possible and just a matter of time.”

houghton said the woman was shot in the torso, with the bullet entering the home through either a window or wall. he said the shooter, or shooters, arrived and left in a vehicle. police do not have a description of the vehicle.
on the morning after the shooting, there were no signs of broken glass. no bullet holes were immediately visible and the entire property was cordoned off by police.
the home, a two-storey blue-and-white duplex, was one of several similar homes on a block filled with aging stucco bungalows and fourplexes. properties with peeling paint and broken fences dotted the street.

frank li, who lives next door from where the shooting took place, said he was jolted awake around 3 a.m. by a number of loud bangs. at first he thought something had been knocked over or fallen in his tenant’s suite.
not long after, his tenant banged on his door, telling him emergency responders were pulling up outside.
li, who was practising his golf swing at a homemade driving range when postmedia arrived, was shocked to find out that someone had been shot. he was very happy to hear that no one was killed.

neighbour jose monge said he heard up to nine shots fired at around 3 a.m., noting the residents of the targeted home had recently moved into one of the four units in the building.
monge said that shortly after hearing the shots, he heard a vehicle take off at high speed. he lives across the alley from the home where the shooting took place and his bedroom window looks out towards the home, but the view is blocked by a dilapidated garage.
monge was shocked to hear that a woman had been shot.
“i’ve lived here for 10 years, never seen this,” he said.
in recent months, a string of extortion-related shootings and crimes have proliferated in metro vancouver, mostly involving surrey based businesses and targeting south asian canadian business owners.

in many cases, the violence came following communications with the business owners in which suspects demanded large sums of money. those who could not pay — or refused to pay — often found their businesses or home hit by gunfire.
