three people are displaced after an overnight fire in a calgary southwest neighbourhood ravaged a home and multiple garages on tuesday.
firefighters were called to the 200 block of silverado west dr. s.w. around 12:10 a.m. and immediately noticed a ‘big plume of smoke’ and visible flames emerging from behind a two-storey home with a detached garage, according to alex kwan, the department’s public information officer.
by the time fire crews had arrived, the fire had already spread to some neighbouring garages, kwan added.
the home’s three occupants had already evacuated the house and one of them had called the department.
“our crews deployed multiple hand lines to start knocking down that fire and limit the spread,” he said. crews were also sent to the alley side to help tame the flames.
kwan could not say how long it took to quell the fire. he added that 44 firefighters and 16 fire apparatus had been deployed to the neighbourhood.

no injuries have been reported as all residents had already evacuated by the time fire crews had arrived.
however, the home and the two nearby garages are damaged beyond occupancy and there was some external damage to neighbouring garages.
residents living in the home will be unable to return to the house until after repairs. the neighbouring homes are safe to live in as the damage was only exterior.
a fire investigator has begun investigating the incident, kwan said.
“it does look like it originated around one of the garage areas,” he added.
