five properties have been evacuated after a train derailed in a rural neighbourhood east of cranbrook saturday.
the regional district of east kootenay said a state of local emergency has been declared and the residents of five homes in the area have been ordered to leave after the train derailed at about 7 a.m.
the transportation safety board said details were limited, but confirmed it has deployed two investigators to the site of a canadian pacific kansas city derailment in a cranbrook subdivision.
they will assess and examine the site and begin gathering information.
in an emailed statement, cpkc said about 12 cars carrying wood products and propane derailed at about 7 a.m. in a remote area, 16 kilometres east of cranbrook.
the company said there were no injuries.
cpkc crews are on site to conduct an assessment and begin work on a clean-up, according to the statement. the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
