in early february, mayor mark sutcliffe said he was working with ottawa council on a plan that would “prioritize canadian products and services over american products.”
that, according to way, should include ride-hailing apps as well.
“everything they do is about circumventing the rules,” he said. “why not apply tariffs to that if they want to work in canada?”
in 2022, uber did enter into a partnership with united food and commercial workers canada, providing some benefits and flexibility to its drivers, including those who deliver food via ubereats.
“over the past three years, we have worked with and advocated for thousands of drivers across the country regarding their rights, healthy and safety,” ufcw national president paul meinema said after the agreement was reached. “labour and gig-based companies like uber have a responsibility in addressing these concerns, and we are committed through this new agreement with uber to make it happen for drivers and delivery people.”
ufcw can provide no-cost legal help to drivers.
in september 2000, uber also entered into an agreement with economical insurance to protect drivers in the event of accidents.
uber also has partnership agreements with the canadian national institute for the blind and ymca canada, and the company counters way’s claims they don’t contribute to the canadian economy.
