an ottawa man and a 16-year-old from greely are among 63 people charged following a provincewide investigation into online child sexual exploitation, the ontario provincial police announced wednesday.
the investigation, dubbed project time, was led by the provincial internet child exploitation strategy, a partnership involving the opp and 25 municipal police services, including the ottawa police service. police said the operation identified and safeguarded 51 victims and resulted in 213 criminal charges and the seizures of 814 electronic devices. another 154 investigations remained ongoing.
police said two of the accused had been in positions of trust and authority in their communities, while eight were repeat offenders. investigators said they conducted 264 criminal investigations during the operation.
according to the opp, 22-year-old mattias chicoine of ottawa was charged with possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material. he was released from custody and was scheduled to appear in court on aug. 18.
police also charged an unidentified 16-year-old from greely with possession and distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, extortion and failing to comply with a release order. under the youth criminal justice act, the teen cannot be identified. his next court date has not yet been set.
police said reports of online child sexual exploitation and child sexual abuse material had risen significantly in recent years. anyone with information related to child sexual exploitation was asked to contact police or to report it online to cybertip.ca
