there was plenty of partying in the city’s fan zones during the world cup, but apparently one regular attendee wasn’t there for the friendly atmosphere.
vancouver police say an assault charge has been approved against a man who was involved in several incidents in the granville street pedestrian zone in recent weeks.
at about 6 p.m. monday, officers patrolling the busy soccer party were approached by a woman who pointed out a man she said swung his fist in her direction.
“as officers approached to speak with him, they observed him try to punch another woman,” sgt. adam donaldson said in a statement on tuesday.

the man fled but was arrested after a short foot chase.
donaldson said the man has been the subject of several complaints involving “violence and confrontational behaviour” along granville since the pedestrian zone was set up in june for the soccer festivities.
