man rescued from scarborough bluffs after passerby hears cries

an unidentified man was rescued by toronto fire service crews on tuesday morning after possibly being stuck for about a day on the scarborough bluffs.
“it is unclear why the man was there or how exactly he got stuck,” fire commander john davidson, of the technical operations unit, told reporters. the lone male “apparently fell over the edge, but i cannot confirm that,” he added.
fire crews were called to the scene at approximately 8 a.m. by someone who heard a man in distress and then called 911. it is believed, although not yet confirmed, that he’d been stuck for about 24 hours.
“he is very lucky that the passerby did hear him,” davidson said. “he’s very fortunate in being discovered and rescued from the situation.”
the extraction
once the man was located, the rescue team conducted a ladder insertion.
“a ladder was brought forward rather than a full rope system that we normally use on the bluffs,” davidson said. “that person was successfully removed from the bluff and transported by our marine unit over to the dock, where they were transferred over to our partners at toronto paramedic services,” davidson said.
the man had minor injuries and was also dehydrated from his extended exposure time to the elements.
davidson said people traversing the area of the bluffs should stay on designated trails and not let curiosity get the better of them by accessing areas that are fenced off.
“it has been an issue in my 34 years of toronto fire service, the bluffs have always been that entertainment area for adventurers (but) … use it from a safe distance,” he said. “it is a dangerous area, although it is a very beautiful area. we just have to respect the elements and the hazards down there.”
