people in ottawa travelling with westjet may still face cancellations, even though the airline has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing its flight attendants.
the canadian union of public employees (cupe) and westjet announced early aug. 3 that they had reached a tentative contract agreement, ending a strike that began aug. 2 and prompted the airline to temporarily suspend its operations.
flight attendants will return to work while union members vote to ratify the agreement.
westjet said it has started restoring its schedule, but warned some flights will continue to be affected as operations recover.
as of monday morning, most scheduled westjet flights to and from ottawa international airport remained cancelled. two departures, to calgary and toronto, were listed as on time on westjet’s website, along with one arriving flight from toronto. the remaining scheduled ottawa flights for aug. 3 had been cancelled.
westjet is asking passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport, as schedules may continue to change.
the strike came after months of contract negotiations between westjet and cupe, which represents about 4,400 flight attendants. the union had been asking for better pay, compensation for work performed on the ground before and after flights and improvements to scheduling.
