there might be a chill in the air but there are so many events bringing warmth to our city in the weeks leading up to christmas. here are five things to do in calgary this weekend. to check out more events, go to events.calgaryherald.com for additional listings.

plaza palooza at olympic plaza

what urban planning types call public space activation, regular folks would describe as turning a location into a fun place to hang out. enter plaza palooza, debuting this weekend at olympic plaza, featuring live entertainment on the main stage, live ice sculpting and other performances, light shows, carnival games and more. this is to be the first of four paloozas at the plaza until dec. 22 — the last events planned there before the space is to be revamped alongside the redevelopment of arts commons, with construction set to begin in january.

cirque musica holiday wonderland

with less than a month until dec. 25, it’s beginning to look a lot like christmas, so let the cirque musica holiday wonderland help to usher in the spirit of the season. the performance at winsport on friday melds music with acrobatics, and organizers promise a heartwarming holiday celebration is on tap.

lions festival of lights

take part in this annual christmas tradition, put together by lions from calgary and area, members of ibew #254, and people from the community at large who donate their time to build and install the array of light displays. everything is lit up daily from 5:30 p.m. to midnight in confederation park, along 14th street n.w. north of 24th avenue.

last chance: international christmas market at spruce meadows

calgary’s venerable showjumping facility hosts its annual christmas market, which is on for its final weekend of the season. let the more than 300 vendors on site help you find the perfect gift for those near and dear. stay for dinner on friday night, small plates on saturday night, and high tea at high noon on the weekend.

the central branch of the calgary public library caps off a month of celebrations of hindu culture with special events on saturday afternoon. there will be presentations on culture, customs and travel; free yoga classes; music and dance performances; a samosa table; and more.
