targeted shootings at a surrey and a delta home occurred at exactly the same time early sunday morning, with police saying the delta shooting was related to extortion.
the surrey police service said shots were fired at a home in the 7800-block of 124th street at 2:43 a.m. and gunshot damage to the outside of the home was found.
the delta police department said its officers responded to a similar call at 2:43 a.m. from a home in the 11200-block of 78b avenue, roughly 12 blocks from the surrey incident. in that case, police also found evidence of several gunshots directed at the home.
in both cases, there were people inside the homes but no one was injured.
staff sgt. mike whiteley of delta police said witnesses reported a suspect getting out of a white suv in front of the home and firing several shots before fleeing.
“preliminary investigation indicates this to be a targeted incident and related to an extortion investigation,” whiteley said. “investigators will be liaising with police partners and the provincial extortion task force to determine if there are any links to other files.”
staff sgt. lindsey houghton said that while the surrey shooting appeared to be targeted, “at this early stage the motive for the shots fired remains under investigation.
