environment canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for ottawa and the surrounding area, warning conditions are favourable for storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall tuesday.
the weather agency says thunderstorms could develop this afternoon and possibly continue into the early evening. wind gusts of up to 110 km/h, golf-ball-sized hail and more than 50 millimetres of rain are possible.
the watch covers much of eastern ontario, while parts of western quebec are also under a severe thunderstorm watch. environment canada warns the storms could lead to localized outages.
meanwhile, environment canada has issued a red tornado warning — its highest alert level — for areas from kingston to prescott, where meteorologists say a severe thunderstorm has the potential to produce a tornado. the warning indicates life-threatening weather capable of causing extreme disruption.
residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and alerts and be prepared to take shelter.
