the university of manitoba’s max rady college of medicine is welcoming a record 30 students into its master of physician assistant studies (mpas) program, double the number of students from previous years.
“i am thrilled to welcome the first class of 30 students into mpas,” said rebecca mueller, mpas program director in a press release friday. “this expansion reflects the increasing demand for physician assistants (pas) in our province but also underscores the critical role that pas play in our health-care system. we are not just expanding educational opportunities, we are investing in the future of health care in our communities, allowing us to serve diverse populations, address health-care shortages and continue to elevate the pa profession in canada.”
the program expansion was supported by the government of manitoba and aims to address health-system challenges and human resource needs.
physician assistants, who work alongside physicians, are trained to assess patients, order tests, prescribe medications, and perform procedures.
the mpas program is competitive, with more than 210 applicants for the 30 available spots. the new class includes students with varied health-care backgrounds and extensive volunteer experience.
