a man who failed in an attempt to jump off a mountain near squamish using a parachute has been rescued.
according to squamish search and rescue, team members were alerted on tuesday evening that a base jumper had crashed immediately after takeoff into the side of slhanay mountain that overlooks squamish.
base is an acronym for buildings, antennas, spans and earth. base jumpers hurl themselves off a fixed object and use a parachute to land safely.
“a team of 25 members responded and were guided to the launch site by a friend of the subject,” squamish search and rescue said on social media. “our rope rescue team located the individual perched on a small rock feature about 60 feet below the edge — wet, cold, but conscious.”
due to the rough terrain, north shore search and rescue’s helicopter team with talon helicopters aircraft were called to extract the man.
“we called in assistance from our partners, who performed a hoist extraction that saved our team hours of difficult travel through hazardous terrain,” the squamish team said.
“the young man was very fortunate, sustaining injuries to both ankles but otherwise doing well. a big thank you to everyone involved for their teamwork and professionalism throughout this complex nighttime rescue.”
