a man was shot and killed by police in the district of sechelt on saturday morning.
b.c. rcmp spokesperson sgt. vanessa munn said sunshine coast rcmp officers were called about a man in distress carrying an edged weapon who had left a residence in the 5900-block of oldmill lane at 3:30 a.m.
“the man fled back into a residence and was pursued by officers,” munn said in a news release. “there were other people, including children, inside the house. police maintained contact with the man who was allegedly holding an edged weapon as they worked to de-escalate the situation.”
the lower mainland emergency response team was called in.
several hours later, just after 10:30 a.m., shots were fired by police inside the home.
“b.c. emergency health services personnel were staged nearby and were immediately called in to provide medical care,” munn said. “however, the individual died. no one else sustained injuries as a result of the interaction.”
in response to a query from postmedia, munn declined to say what type of edged weapon was involved. she confirmed the man had an association with the home but provided no details.
according to the independent investigations office of b.c., police entered the porpoise bay area home at around 4:30 a.m. there were four people inside. three of the four were safely removed from the home before the man was shot. the fourth person who remained inside the home was not hurt.
