montreal’s transit agency says dogs will be permitted to ride the métro permanently, following a pilot project that began in october 2022. however, there will be new rules imposed on furry friends riding the rails, likely to come into force early in the new year.
dogs will no longer be permitted during peak periods on weekdays. the stm will now only allow them before 7 a.m., from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and after 6 p.m. dogs will be permitted at all times on weekends and holidays.
dogs will also be permitted to ride all day and night during warmer months, when there are fewer students riding the métro. there will be no time restrictions in place from the third monday of may until the third monday of august.
owners must keep their dogs close to them, with a leash not more than 1.25 metres or 49 inches long. they must also be able to stop their dogs from barking, howling or making other sounds, according to a notice on the stm’s website. owners must pick up any mess made by dogs, and only one dog is permitted per person.
the stm also announced new rules for bikes. no more than two bikes will be permitted on the same car, and cyclists are being asked to avoid the first car of each train because it is often used by school groups, daycares and people with functional limitations.

the stm will also ban electric modes of transportation including e-bikes, scooters and skateboards, due to the possibility of fires caused by the batteries of these devices.
the agency is proposing these amendments to the agglomeration council, with a vote expected on dec. 19. if approved, they will come into force in the following weeks.
