a lasalle man is facing drunk driving charges after allegedly piloting his pickup truck in the wrong direction down e.c. row expressway — straight into the clutches of windsor police officers who were setting up a roadside checkpoint.  members of the traffic enforcement unit were setting up a holiday season ride (reduce impaired driving everywhere) stop on wednesday, when they noticed a black pickup coming toward them.
police said the truck was traveling the wrong way on the westbound jefferson boulevard on-ramp leading to the e.c. row expressway. the vehicle was headed directly toward the officers.
the officers turned on their emergency lights and sirens and were able to stop the truck.
while speaking to the driver, police said the officers observed signs of intoxication, including a strong odour of alcohol and glassy eyes.
they arrested the driver and charged him with counts of impaired driving and refusal to provide a breath test.
windsor police have repeatedly warned motorists that patrol officers are stepping up their presence on the streets of windsor and amherstburg through the holiday season. that includes ride checkpoints at rotating locations 24 hours a day, seven days a week from now until jan. 1.
