former nepean mpp and ontario cabinet minister lisa macleod says she will not run for mayor of ottawa this fall.
macleod made the announcement on facebook live friday afternoon, ending speculation about whether she would enter the race. macleod said she would instead focus on her work as an editor-in-chief of a travel magazine.
her decision comes after she publicly criticized traffic, city finances and downtown ottawa in a widely shared social media post, prompting calls from some supporters for her to seek the mayor’s office.
macleod had previously backed mark sutcliffe in the 2022 mayoral election, but questioned on the livestream whether ottawa is “a better place, a safer place and a stronger place” than it was four years ago. she also predicted the municipal election would centre on issues including traffic, transit and public safety.
macleod served six terms as the progressive conservative mpp for nepean and nepean-carleton, holding cabinet posts under premier doug ford, including children, community and social services and tourism, culture and sport.
