crews battle large fire in north delta

firefighters are battling a large fire in an industrial area in north delta on thursday.
delta and surrey firefighters were dispatched to the fire in the 9300-block of alaska way just before 9:10 a.m., said the city of delta.
the vancouver fraser port authority, which owns the land, said the site is a former mill under demolition.
“there is currently no impacts to port operations,” said a spokeswoman, adding the port authority’s harbour patrol team is on the water to assess whether additional measures are needed.
flames could be seen bursting from the roof of the mill as firefighters used ladder trucks to get the blaze under control. by 1:30 p.m., crews got the fire under control but were still working to extinguish it, said the city. about 30 firefighters and 14 fire trucks responded to the blaze.
the cause isn’t yet known. there have been no reports of injuries or missing occupants.
the blaze caused billowing plumes of smoke that could be seen from neighbouring municipalities.
metro vancouver said the fire is producing “considerable smoke” and metro is monitoring air quality. the air quality reading for the region currently shows as low-risk, although the regional authority said the readings may not capture the impact of the fire.

it asked residents to avoid the area and to take precautions if they smell smoke, including closing windows and staying indoors.
the fire hasn’t affected traffic on highway 17, said drivebc.
the fire broke out on the site of the former acorn mill, which stopped operations after a blaze in april 2024.
the sawmill was built in 1963 and was acquired by forestry giant interfor in 2001. it was used primarily to cut specialty timber for traditional japanese home construction.
in 2022, the mill was purchased by san group, a langley-based forestry firm. the company filed for creditor protection last november.
