b.c. wildfires: signal hill fire near pemberton leads to evacuation order

a small wildfire near the village of pemberton has led to an evacuation order for the signal hill area and evacuation alerts for nearby residents.
the fire, which is about a third of a square kilometre in size and was discovered wednesday, is burning between one mile lake park and the pemberton wetlands wildlife management area.
it’s believed to have been caused by human activity and was classified as out of control, but not yet a wildfire of note, as of thursday afternoon, according to the b.c. wildfire service.
the only current wildfires of note are the adjacent brunswick creek and ainslie creek fires near boston bar, which together are known as the brunswick complex. those continue to be the subject of eight evacuation orders in the area as well as several alerts, though the more troublesome brunswick creek blaze hasn’t grown as quickly this week as it did in the days following its discovery on july 2.
wildfire activity is predicted to pick up in the coming days because of warming and drying conditions, despite a smattering of light rain across metro vancouver on thursday.
the wildfire service said the heat and drought will likely spread north and west through the week, increasing the risk of wildfires. lightning is also in the forecast for some areas, and fire prohibitions are in place.
