hanks also marked the occasion on his own instagram, sharing a video of himself jumping into the water. “this guy turns 70 today. great music. good coffee. good cause,” he wrote, promoting a “hanks b-day marathon” on new york city’s boss radio 66, where he has been a part-time guest host for years, according to people.

on why ‘life is such a burden’ at 35

despite hitting the big 7-0, hanks said two years ago he was actually feeling better than he did decades ago.
“the hardest for us was when we were playing 35,” he told entertainment tonight in 2024. “that time where your metabolism stops, gravity starts tearing you down, your bones start wearing off. you stand differently.”
he added, “i think i’m in better shape now. because my kids are grown up, i’m getting decent exercise and i can eat right. you can’t do that when you’re 35. life is such a burden.”

i’ve spent the past 25 years at the toronto sun, joining the newsroom in 2000 fresh out of ryerson polytechnic university — now toronto metropolitan university — where i studied print journalism. my first job was copy runner, which is shorthand for fetching coffee and learning fast. from there, i moved through a grab bag of roles: obituary and horse-racing typist, substitute editor of the now-defunct tv book supplement, and eventually print layout editor, working across departments including lifestyle, travel, and entertainment.
