the als society of canada (als canada) announced the expansion of its national mental health support program for caregivers of individuals living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als). the virtual initiative, funded by the petro-canada caremakers foundation, provides accessible mental health services to caregivers regardless of their location in canada.
through a partnership with awc grief support, the program connects caregivers with provincially licensed therapists for up to four virtual therapy sessions. these services are integrated into als canada’s national mental health program, which also includes support groups, webinars, and educational resources. the program is designed to help caregivers manage the psychological impact of caring for individuals with a progressive terminal disease, including stress, anxiety, and burnout.
“caregivers for people living with als carry an extraordinary emotional and physical load,” kim barry, vice-president, community services, als canada said in a press release. “they are adapting in real time to constant change while witnessing a loved one lose function and independence. that emotional impact can be overwhelming. access to timely mental health support can make a critical difference in helping caregivers sustain themselves through the progression of the disease and what comes next.”

approximately 4,000 canadians currently live with als, a neuromuscular condition that causes progressive paralysis as the brain loses the ability to communicate with muscles. as mobility and respiratory functions decline, the care requirements often intensify, requiring caregivers to manage complex medical needs, equipment coordination, and healthcare navigation alongside personal and professional responsibilities.
the national rollout builds on the als canada caregivers support program, a pilot launched in ontario in 2025. leila fenc, executive director of the petro-canada caremakers foundation, noted that the expansion aims to ensure professional care is available nationwide. “through our funding, we’re pleased to help make these enhanced supports accessible to caregivers across canada, so they can access the professional mental health care they need, wherever they live,” fenc said in a press release.
caregivers can access the program and verify eligibility through the als canada website. the organization continues to provide community-led support and resources to those affected by the disease across the country.
