air canada, sunwing vacations group and air transat have suspended all flights to and from cuba indefinitely, the airlines announced on friday.the canadian carriers had already scaled back flights to the caribbean nation throughout the winter and spring of 2026.“following an analysis of our program in cuba and the current operating environment, the sunwing vacations group (including sunwing vacations, westjet vacations and westjet vacations quebec) has made the difficult decision to indefinitely suspend all of its operations in cuba until further notice,” wrote sunwing vacations group in a press release. air canada had planned to resume service between canada and cuba but announced friday that the plan is postponed “until further notice.”the airlines’ latest announcements are sparked by a severe aviation fuel shortage on the island nation. cuban authorities assert the crisis is exacerbated by the trump administration’s decision to cut oil shipments from venezuela.westjet and air transat’s websites showed no flights between montreal and havana were available for booking until at least december 2026. montréal-pierre elliott trudeau international airport’s website indicated no flights to cuba were scheduled on its arrivals and departures page.a travel advisory from the canadian government is in effect for cuba because of the “worsening shortages of fuel, electricity and basic necessities including food, water and medicine,” according to the federal government website.for customers who have already booked a trip to cuba, westjet promises to present them with other options, “including changing their booking to another destination or cancelling their trip and obtaining a full refund.”
