a cargo ship ran aground on the st. lawrence river on june 30 between Île st-ours and contrecoeur, and is still stuck more than three weeks later. the vessel, onego otra, ran aground because of a rudder problem, according to canadian coast guard spokesperson craig macartney. it's currently outside the shipping channel and is not obstructing navigation, he said in an email statement. no injuries or pollution have been reported, and the situation is stable. lightening operations on the vessel were carried out on july 12 and 13. a total of 2,720 tonnes of cargo were unloaded. on july 14, attempts to refloat the vessel using three tugboats were unsuccessful. operations to lighten the ship are still underway friday, with plans to unload an additional 2,400 tonnes of cargo from the ship, said canadian coast guard spokesperson nick drescher brown. "depending on when the lightening operations end, a new refloating attempt, again using three tugboats, could be attempted on july 25," drescher brown added. according to marinetraffic.com, the ship departed from montreal on june 30 and is destined for new orleans. the general cargo ship, sailing under the flag of antigua and barbuda, is 146 meters long and 18 metres wide. an exclusion zone is in place around the vessel. drone flights are prohibited within a radius of two nautical miles and up to 2,000 feet of altitude. pleasure craft must maintain a distance of 250 metres from the stranded vessel, according to the coast guard.
