a texas-based model and entrepreneur has created a video interview with her dying grandmother that has gone viral, racking up more than three million views over four days on tiktok.
in the video, titled
“bubbie answering questions on euthanasia,” seemingly shot in vancouver, ali tate cutler is seen asking a series of questions of the older woman, who looks to be at peace with her choice for medical assistance in dying.
“it’s like the light at the end of the tunnel,” she says at one point, and also says she wants the procedure to happen in hospital rather than at home, adding: “i came in quietly. i’d like to go out quietly.”
cutler asks: “are you nervous? are you excited? how do you feel?” the older woman shakes her head and answers: “looking forward to it. just putting an end to being dependent, no control.” she adds: “i’ve always made my own decisions for myself in living. i trust i will in death.”
a portion of the interview video covers what factors “bubbie” (her name is not given) considered in making her decision: “your diagnosis, if it’s fatal, how many more months you have.” she adds: “they can give you time to consider. they keep stressing the fact that you can always change your mind.”
she also describes how the actual day will go, having been told that “the big pain is the prick in the hand to provide for the little valves.” after being put into a deep sleep, she says, there are two more injections, but “at that point you don’t know so it’s painless.”
