when it comes to long-term relationships, women prefer to laugh than be impressed by sculpted physiques. according to a new study
published in the journal personal relationships, women find humour is a more attractive trait in a long-term partner but prefer physical strength for short-term flings.
the study’s author, university of arkansas psychology instructor mitch brown, said the latest findings confirm previous research on the subject.
“our data indicate that strength and humour are independent in their influence on women’s preferences, though we continue to show that women prioritize men’s strength in short-term relationships,”
brown told the school’s website.
he said humour, on the other hand, helped create social and emotional bonds that led to long-term romance.
“these data provide evidence for how women navigate mating markets through various fitness cues.”

brown and two psychology students asked the dating preferences of 394 heterosexual or bisexual women at a large public university. the median age of participants was 19 and 251 women said they were single while 143 had a partner.
they sought to determine how women evaluate the desirability of strong men who used affiliative or aggressive humour in short-term and long-term relationships.
