“if i had played on the pga tour, i would have definitely made the team and could have helped team usa,” johnson said.
but liv golf’s brooks koepka was selected and the squad has the legendary jack nicklaus’ seal of approval.
johnson told the post: “i would love to be a part of the team. but to be honest, i haven’t really played that well, this year. but have i played well enough to be on the team? yeah. i didn’t have the best year. was it good enough to make the team? i think so. if i would have been playing on (the pga tour), yeah, i would have made the team.
“do i think i can help the us team? absolutely.”
ultimately, as johnson lamented, being part of a ryder cup team is an honour and something players strive to achieve time and again.
johnson, 39, jumped to the controversial, saudi-backed lib golf tour in the spring of 2022. he inked a deal worth a reported $125 million then made another $35 million in the loop’s inaugural season.
the only pga events he has played since making the jump are majors — and that’s what mattered to zach johnson. in those events, johnson’s play was less than inspiring.
“if i would have played a little better at the majors, i think i definitely would have had a really good chance to be on the team,” johnson said. “but just struggled a little bit in the majors this year, which happens.”
